November and December Initiative
The Afghanistan Samsortya is launching a seed planting campaign and needs your help. This Holiday initiative will start on November 15 and the objective is to seek financial pledges to support our nursery. In lieu of a gift, you may wish to give a gift that will last lifetimes. A $20 contribution is comparable to supporting a seed from its planting stage to its mature stage as a sapling when it will be ready for transplanting. The individuals donating will receive an email with the photograph of the nursery and may keep informed weekly of the progress of the nursery from the Afghanistan Samsortya blog.
Recent events:
The New Forests Project has donated five kilograms of high quality seed species of the following: Moringa oleifera, Acacia auriculiformis, Acacia nilotica, Acacia tortilis and Acacia Siamea.
We planted these seeds in four specific nurseries in late September. Our seeds have germinated and our farmers are currently nurturing the baby saplings. In addition, The New Forests Project through its partner the World Seed Program finalized a second shipment of tree seeds. This five-kilo shipment will reach our farming community in late November. We intend to plant these seeds in December, corresponding with the end of the year holidays as well as the New Year celebrations.
We are grateful to the 4th grade students at the Union Springs Elementary School in Union Springs New York for participating in a fundraising initiative on our behalf. This is the second year that they have engaged in this effort and this past June they contributed $200.
On October 21, The Freeport Community Library in Freeport, Maine hosted a talk about Samsortya and the conditions of war and an ongoing refugee crisis in Afghanistan by Mariam Raqib. Attendees enjoyed refreshments of Afghan food items and pledged support for the initiative.
On October 15, the Salisbury Library in Salisbury, New Hampshire invited Mariam Raqib to join their discussion on Three Cups of Tea. Mariam spoke about the Samsortya project and received pledges to support this initiative.
We are also pleased to announce that the Civil Rights Team at Carrabec High School in North Anson, Maine and students at Freeport High School in Freeport, Maine are collaborating with The Afghanistan Samsortya on fundraising initiatives during the upcoming academic year.
